Rye to go! Toppings that make every bite better
Rye bread is one of the most underrated and overlooked loaves. With its rich, hearty texture and slightly tangy flavour, rye bread makes the perfect base for a wide variety of toppings. Here are a few of our favourite combinations to fall in ‘loaf’ with your rye.
1. Smashed Avocado with Parsley and Olive Oil
Looking for a fresh, satisfying snack? This simple topping brings the creamy goodness of avocado to life with a touch of fragrant parsley and the richness of olive oil.
How to make it:
- Mash half an avocado and spread it generously over a slice of toasted rye bread.
- Drizzle with a good-quality olive oil, and season with a pinch of sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper.
- Top with freshly chopped parsley for a burst of green freshness.
- Optional: Add a squeeze of lemon juice for a zesty finish!
2. Crumbled Feta and Pomegranate Seeds
For a savoury yet slightly sweet combination, this topping strikes the perfect balance of flavours. The creamy feta pairs beautifully with the sweet, juicy pomegranate seeds, while the olive oil brings it all together.
How to make it:
- Crumble some feta cheese and spread it over a slice of rye bread.
- Sprinkle with fresh pomegranate seeds for a pop of colour and sweetness.
- Drizzle with olive oil, and season with a touch of black pepper.

How to make it:
- Spread a thick layer of your favourite hummus on a slice of rye bread.
- Top with sliced ripe tomatoes, arranged neatly on top.
- Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Pizza topping inspiration
Got our Sourdough Pizza Kit but need some inspiration? Experiment with our tried-and-tested toppings and get creative at home. If you prefer bread to pizza, you could use these as inspiration for bruschetta or sandwich fillings.

Our fav toppings:
Cheese, tomato, ham and mushroom
Cheese, tomato and sausage
Cheese, tomato and ham
Cheese, sausage, balsamic red onion, kale
Note: You must pre-cook the sausage, kale, red onion, and mushrooms. We usually pan-fry them beforehand, but you can also oven-roast the kale. For the ham, cooking is optional—you can add it at the last minute if preferred. We like to add Parma ham at the end rather than putting it in the oven with the pizza but it depends on the type of ham you use and personal preference.

If you want a more flatbread-style pizza with a thicker crust (like the image to the left), roll the dough out less.
This is our vegetarian option with cheese, balsamic red onion and kale. You can include sausage for a meatier alternative.
Important:
- Drain the excess water from the mozzarella before adding.
- Use a good tomato sauce like Mutti pizza sauce (included in our pizza-making kit).
- When we say cheese, we use a mix of grated mozzarella and grated cheddar for the perfect melt.

How to Care for Your Panettone
To make sure your panettone stays fresh and delicious long after you’ve brought it home, follow these simple care tips:
- Store in a cool, dry place: Keep your panettone in its original packaging, ideally in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A pantry or kitchen cupboard works perfectly.
- Avoid refrigerating: While it might seem tempting, don’t store panettone in the fridge as it can dry out the bread. Room temperature is ideal for preserving its fluffy texture.
- Keep it wrapped: If you’ve already opened your panettone, wrap it in wax paper or foil, and place it in an airtight container to keep it fresh for as long as possible. This helps retain the moisture and prevents it from getting stale.
- Panettone shelf life: A well-stored panettone can last for several weeks, but if you have leftover panettone, it also freezes well. Simply wrap it tightly and place it in the freezer, and it should last for up to three months.
Taking proper care of your panettone ensures you can enjoy it at its best, whether you’re indulging in a festive slice or repurposing it into one of our creative recipes.
